Kind of funny reading the responses to this post:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

After every option somebody lists as pointless, somebody else responds "that's my favorite feature!" This is why there are so many seemingly pointless options on cars. If you could pick and choose those options without them being grouped into $2,000 packages, that would be nice.

I don't need my car to read text messages to me, though, that's for sure.

So far I've mostly seen people saying they like heated seats.

The rest are easily pointless if they involve distracting the driver from driving, or laziness.

I also don't need a button to hold the brakes for me if my feet get tired.

Siri can do that now. No need to have your car do it to.

I still want to be able to update my FB/Twitter/Instagram/SnapChat/Grindr via my car, though.

I will argue to the death that party mode is needed on every vehicle, regardless of whatever evidence disagrees with me.

Yeah, its mostly heated seats. you don't NEED them, but its far from the most useless feature.

I'm not dissing heated seats, I love them. I want them on my BRZ that I will most likely get as my next car.

They do not help the car drive, handle, or perform any better, and for a 'sports' car that's pretty much the definition of a pointless option, but they do make it much easier to deal with it being cold.

They also don't detract from the experience. The weight is negligible as is the power consumption and the cost is (when its a stand alone option) marginal. When I had heated seats they were on all day everyday, summer or winter because it helped with my lower back pain. I am pricing out components to rebuilt my front seats in the cruiser and seat heaters will be a part of it.

Heated seats and outside mirrors are nice. Cruise control is nice. I like the autodimming rearview mirror too. Autodimming sideview mirrors are cool in theory but in practice don't stand the test of time. If they did I'd like them too. (had them on a '98 and they were really cool until they broke...)

Otherwise give me nice speakers and bluetooth, an aux audio input and I can take care of the rest. I could care less about most of the other 'features' of today's cars.

My current car has "Auto" heated seats. They turn on when it's cold out and you remote start the car, they are on high if the cabin is very cold and turn themselves down and off as the cabin warms up. Nicely implemented, but not a must-have.

No, but hill assist is nice for cars with manual transmissions since they mean I won't roll back into the idiot that pulled up 2 inches from my back bumper on a hill during the morning commute. It's not specifically necessary, but it does remove that slight anxiety.

Funny as I read "death party mode"... what's party mode? (what's death party mode, that sounds more fun!)

For my money, it's the color changing interior mood lighting that seems to be popping up on cars lately. Is it kind of a neat "gee-wiz" feature? Sure, but it serves absolutely no purpose beyond entertaining drunk passengers/small children. It was on both my previous Mini Cooper S, and my current Focus ST, and in both I was stumped as to why it even existed in the first place.

I'd even be fine with just the wiring in place for speakers and the dimensions needed to fit in the mounting bracket. I'll install some myself if they made it easy to get the door panel off. Same for head units. I'd gladly bring my own to the party to save on the cost of the car.

Party mode was a feature in the 4Runner for a while. According to Reddit who quotes the manual, "In party mode, the sound volume from the speakers on the back door is bigger than in base mode. (The output from the speakers on the rear doors will be transferred to the back door speakers.)" Plus, it boosts the bass.

I know, a lot more disappointing than what the imagination would make it do. But laws tend to prevent other things from happening.

Death party mode is exactly like party mode, except a lot more brutal. More metal and facepaint and fire and shit like that.

The stupidest options, by far, are all the silly customizations on the Porsche configurator. Some samples from the Boxster GTS configurator:

$645 to paint the black plastic trim piece on the bottom of the side mirrors.

Kinja'd!!!

vs.

Kinja'd!!!

It's $675 to do the same to the air intakes on the rear fenders, and you can even pay $295 to paint the headlight washer nubbins body color.

Kinja'd!!!

Want your gauge faces to be some other color, like maybe Luxor Beige ? That'll be $690 please.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, and if you have the Sport Chrono package, and also want the Sport Chrono dial to match your beige gauges, you need to spend another $500 to get a custom color on your Sport Chrono dial.

Kinja'd!!!

The stupid expensive interior options continue with such loveliness as paying $1200 to have your air vent slats painted.

Kinja'd!!!

Wow, such a huge difference! Which means I totally want to spend the $1940 to have this trim piece around the nav screen and dash buttons painted too!

Kinja'd!!!

Might as well finish it off with $365 to paint the keys to match.

Oh, and we haven't even gotten to all the ridiculously overpriced leather, aluminum, carbon fiber, and alcantara trim options you can also waste money on.

But you get the idea.

Not pointless. You can change the rental Focus to have glaring fuchsia interior lighting right before turning it in. Also switch the MFD to German and set all the radio presets to Spanish and religious stations.

Free chuckles while sitting on your flight on the way back home, totally worth it.

Lmao, fair enough. I did get a laugh with the ones in the mini because if you held the toggle down for a bit the colors would begin to cycle automatically. That + fairly inebriated wife lead to some laughs as she tried to figure out if the lights in the car were changing colors or if she was just THAT drunk :D

Hill assist is one of the few things I wish my new Outback had. Especially when I have the SI drive set to "intelligence" mode and forget that means I need to use more go pedal to set off on a hill without stalling.
